Completing this module, I felt that this assignment has made me realize the concepts used everyday, without us knowing it. Conflict and negotiation, verbal and non-verbal messages are used everyday in interacting with others. Moreover, living in Malaysia, a country diverse in cultures, intercultural communication is one of the most important and valuable chapter to learn. Learning this chapter has helped me to understand the importance of communicating carefully with people of other cultures due to the different perceptions and interpretation each culture has.

The first learning outcome of this assignment are applying the principles of communication and behavior in analyzing interactions with others, both at individual and at group levels. The second learning outcomes is the ability to demonstrate to analyse and response in handling conflict as well as efficient negotiation skills in dealing with variety of individuals. The right attitudes to achieve these goals are by identifying what the questions requires and using the correct concepts of Effective Public Communication from the right chapter as a guideline to write the essay.

ii. Reflection
Selecting intercultural communication as the subject of my essay, I learnt the differences between ethnicity and race, and culture. I learnt how ethnicity and race is represent your identity and that culture is not something you are born with but instead learn as you grow up. Whereby, a Chinese person can grow up in Europe but practicing European culture instead of the normal culture practiced by the average Chinese. This assignment taught me that only by applying principles of communications in my work will I be able to fully understand the concepts deeply and apply it in my daily life effectively.

ETHNOCENTRISM AND STEREOTYPING
ISSUES AND SOLUTIONS

CLASS ASSIGNMENT: INDIVIDUAL ESSAY

QUINNIE TAN

“Good Morning”, “Buenas Tardes”, “Guten Morgen”, “Selamat Pagi”, “Zǎo ān”, and “Sabah Al-khair”. All these phrases mean the same, only in different language. Home to seven billion people, with one hundred and ninety six countries on seven different continents, Earth is abundant with cultures. Culture is defined as “a way of life developed and shared by a group of people and passed down from generation to generation” (Tubbs & Moss, 2003). There is no definite one culture; each country has its own cultures. Cultures are then divided into subcultures, whereby each subculture is a member of the dominant culture but divided based on economic or social class, ethnicity or geographically (Jandt, 2013).  These different cultures settled alongside each other without knowing the existence of one another. Then globalisation swept the world. People are suddenly exposed to different cultures from around the world. Despite years of being exposed to each other, divisions among culture have sometimes intensified.  So, is it possible for the society to move towards a world with greater intercultural understanding and tolerance ?. Examining the racial issues happening in the world will help to understand the roots of the issue and solve it.
According to Jandt, in his book An Introduction to Intercultural Communication, ethnocentrism is defined as judging another culture by the standards of one’s own culture negatively. Ethnocentrism occurs when one believes in the superiority of one’s own culture above all others (Jandt, 2013). In our world, everybody is ethnocentric (Barger, 2008).  Recently, the Boston bombing was all over the news. The news covered this incident twenty-four hours, with a three hundred degree angle on the incident. They showed every aspects and development after the bombing. However, this type of bombing happens every day in Syria, killing more people compared to the Boston bombing (Hassan, 2013). However, they do not receive enough attention from the media. With just one incident, Americans were given the attention and sympathy of millions around the world. Meanwhile, half a world away, the Syrians were left defenceless with nobody giving them sympathy and helping them.  This shows that Americans are considered superior to others, hence making their plight even worse than others, and all the attentions are directed towards them.
Ethnocentrism is often accompanied with stereotyping. According to James Neulip, stereotyping is when a member of a group makes a positive or negative attribution towards a member of another group. Stereotypes are usually associated with certain traits and behaviours that make a person categorised as a member of a particular group (Neulip, 2008). One of the most common stereotyping is racial stereotype. For example, Asians are usually labelled as hard-working, smart, docile and submissive (CMCH Texas), whereas blacks are perceived as lazy, ignorant, dirty, musical and religious (Neulip, 2008). Though some of these traits are true, most of the time, they do not accurately represent the members of the group at all. In almost every Hollywood movie production, the main character or hero will always be a Caucasian male. Then, their side-kick will be characters of other descend. These side-kicks may be African-American, Chinese-American, Latin American or Native American. The hero will always be portrayed as a character that is strong, tall handsome, rich and smart. The image of a perfect hero. The side-kick’s characteristics vary, depending on which race they are. If the side-kick is an Asian, they are always portrayed as good in martial arts, serious, mysterious and very traditional. These stereotype traits have lead people to believe that all these type of races have these characteristics. Although some are true, it is not at all accurate. Based on Neulip’s inference on people’s perception of blacks, not all blacks are dirty, lazy, ignorant and so on. They prove to be as good as the Caucasians themselves. President Barrack Obama, Martin Luther King Jr. and Oprah Winfrey are all blacks, and yet they are not ignorant at all. They are aware of the problems they are facing in the country and they are trying their hardest to tackle the issues.
The development of technology has enabled us to exchange cultures drastically. Now, they are many mix-marriages or people of different cultures living together in the same area. So, is it possible for us to move towards a society with intercultural understanding and tolerance? Yes, it is possible. It would not be easy, it will take a long time to get there, but it is a possibility. Gordon Allport (1954) proposed the Intergroup Contact Theory. He stated that for an intergroup contact to reach its optimum, four conditions are to be meet ; equal status between groups, authority-support, shared goals and intergroup cooperation. His logic behind this theory is because interactions between groups are not based on competition, it would result in a decrease of prejudice (Tubbs & Moss, 2003). However, in the recent years, social psychologist Thomas Pettigrew has suggested that friendship is necessary for intergroup interaction to be optimum.
Examining the issues pertaining to ethnocentrism and stereotyping and the solutions offered by Allport and Pettigrew, an inference can be made. People should stop being ethnocentric. Everybody should understand that neither culture is better than the other. Each and every culture is unique in its own way. One must expose and introduce one’s culture to others for them to understand one’s culture. In return, one must understand people’s culture and respect their culture without comparing them. To move towards a world with zero tolerance of ethnocentrism and stereotyping, it will need support from the authority. The government should promote unity and should stop dividing and identifying people based on their race. People should also stop relying on stereotypes when judging people, they should know that everyone is unique and has their own characteristics. They should not be judge solely based on their membership in a social group.
In conclusion, it is possible for us to move towards a society with intercultural understanding and tolerance with five simple steps; equal status between groups, authority-support, shared goals, intergroup cooperation and friendship. Tolerance and understanding will not happen in the blink of an eye, after all Rome was not built in one day. However, by practicing these five steps, society will moves gradually move towards the optimal interaction among cultures.

Bella: No way!. I remember everything about that night! Don’t tell me it was an accident!.
Edward: Bella. I think is Sam. He’s been loving you since university days. That morning, where was he? Tell me!?
Bella: Sam loves me? *Shock Face*. He went back when we went to the hotel. He texted me.
Edward: Bella Smith, I can’t be responsible for this child. I’m in love with one girl and that is Alice.
Bella: Edward, you’ve already betrayed her. Let’s talk to our parents. For your information, I won’t abort this baby!.
Edward: Your parents won’t accept me Bella. I’m a driver. Think about it.
Bella: You don’t know that!!
Edward: Fine! If that is the only solution you can think of. * Angry Tone*
Bella: Edward, I love you. Why don’t you calm yourself down and go back to think logically.
Edward: Fine. Let’s go.
THE NEXT MORNING AT BELLA’S HOME
Bella’s phone rings
Edward: Good morning Bella
Bella: Edward. Morning. What’s wrong?
Edward: Nothing is wrong. I have been thinking the whole night through that we should start a family. I will be responsible for the baby.

Edward: Alice, Bella is not joking. We got drunk that night and next thing I know Bella is pregnant.
Alice: What Edward! How could you??. You cheated on me with Bella. Bella Smith, I taught we are best friends. Sam was right. Bella you are jealous with me because I’m with Edward. (Crying)

Edward: We know we did a mistake, Alice.
Alice: So, What is next? Marry??
Edward: Yes, we are getting married this weekend.
Alice: I knew it! *Angry tone*
Bella: Alice, please.
Alice: Bella, as your best friend I will attend, but for me to talk to you it will take time.
The next morning, Bella was cleaning her handbag wardrobe and she saw a man’s singlet in the bag that she used when she went to the bar. The singlet has Sam’s name stitched to it. She was shocked. That day itself Bella knew the child belonged to Sam but Bella does not want to tell anyone because she truly wanted to marry Edward.
Two days before the wedding.
Bella is feeling guilty because she is lying to Edward and Alice. She went down to release her stress and she saw Sam.
BELLA’S HOME
Bella: Sam, What are you doing here?
Sam: I want to talk to you.
Bella: I knew it! This baby is yours!
Sam: Please. I can explain. I just want to marry you. I love you Bella. I do this because of us. I thought your dad will ask you to marry me but it went the other way.

THE END

SUMMARY
The concepts that we used from Conflicts and Negotiation is:
1)
Perceived Inference
2)
Intrapersonal Conflict
3)
Escalation and Resolution
4)
Obliging
5)
Compromising
6)
To be successful, you must consider the other’s person’s needs.

1) Perceived Influence
The meaning of perceived influence is if we would like something and another person keeps us from getting it, then interference has occurred. In this script perceived influence happen in Part 2-Controversial Part. It happened when Alice tries to convince Bella to tell Edward the truth but Bella refused. We can see perceived influence when Alice wants Edward but Bella is stopping her.

2) Intrapersonal Conflict
Intrapersonal conflict is the first level to classify conflict. It usually takes place within individual. Intrapersonal conflict can include attitudes, emotions, values or personality drives that are conflict with each other. These concepts happen in Part 2. Whereby, Edward has a hard time deciding whether to accept the child that Bella is carrying or not. It also happens in Part 2 where Bella have hard time to decide whether to tell Edward the truth or not.

3) Escalation and Resolution
Escalation and resolution means that a conflict generally escalates until both parties have reached a stalemate where neither party feels that they can win the argument .A resolved conflicts may also leave behind damaged relationship and hurt feelings. It was applied in Part 2, where Mr Smith (Bella’s dad) wanted Edward to leave her daughter but on the other hand Edward wanted Mr Smith to accept him as a son in law in that family.
4) Obliging
Obliging means a lot of things. The main definition to combine with the script is try to satisfy the expectations of the other, usually try to accommodate the wishes of the other and generally satisfy the needs of the others. It happens in Part 2. When Alice sacrifices her love for Edward after she knows Bella is pregnant.
 5) Compromising
Compromising means try to find a middle course to resolve an impasse, negotiate with the other so that compromise can be made and use “give and take” so that compromised can be made. It has many more meaning but this two is suitable for the script above. It happens in Part 3 where Bella use the give and take to compromise others. Bella give Edward to Alice so that her child will have the real father, Sam. She sacrificed her love for Edward. She finally told the truth so that Edward would be happy with Alice.
6) To be successful, you must consider the other’s person’s needs.
The meaning of this concept is in all forms of communication, you must analyse your audience in order to tailor your communication. It happens in part 2, where Edward sacrificed his love for Alice to be with Bella. He took responsibility because he knew that the child needed a father.
